Debriefing on the Frakking End

Last night was the series finale of Battlestar Galactica, one of my all time favourite shows. I’d been looking forward to and dreading it at the same time. Looking forward to it because I wanted to know how it ended, but dreading it because then that meant no more BSG.

The first hour and change were GREAT! Lots of good story, and a great battle scene as the Galactica attacked the Cylon colony to find Hera. Suspension of disbelief was required in good measure, that’s for sure, but it was still good.

Then we came to the denoument. I know Ron Moore, the executive producer & head writer, has said he struggled to figure out an ending. Until he finally remembered that the show has always been about the characters, not necessarily the story. Which made the show great, but I found the way he resolved a lot of the storylines to be a little bit of a cop-out.

So now it’s time to bust out the DVDs and start watching from the very beginning again. By the time I get to the end of Season 3 I’m sure the full Season 4 (4.0 + 4.5) will be out, so I can finish everything off nicely. I’m sad the show’s gone, as it was one of my favourites, but it had to end at some point. It wasn’t the type of story that just could have gone on, week after week. The whole point of the story was to:

  1. Get away from the Cylons.
  2. Find a place to settle & live.

That’s it, that’s all. Since over the course of the 5 years they’d come to a bit of a truce, at least with a major part of the Cylons, that only left finding a place to live. And since we’d already found Earth at the end of Season 4.0, where could the show go? Where could the humans go? I won’t say any more just in case you haven’t yet watched the finale, but needless to say, the did find somewhere to go.

So farewell Battlestar Galactica! You kept me guessing all the way to the frakking end. So say we all.
