“We’re agents Mulder and Scully, F-B-I”

Mulder & Scully on the Simpsons

As a David Duchovny fan, this is one of my all-time favourite Simpsons episode. This is why I am pleased to see that he’s made his return to television on the new Showtime series Californication. Although if you’re looking for a stiff and boring Mulder here, I’m happy to say that you won’t find him here. What you will see is a lecherous, debauched David Duchovny, slobbering over his ex-wife, sleeping with any female that will stop long enough to talk to him, and trying to be a good dad to his 12-year old daughter.

And it’s fabulous.

One of the reasons I’ve always loved David is because he is an intelligent person who happens to be an actor. He was one credit shy of getting his Ph.D. in English Literature before chucking it all to become an actor, which impressed me. Sure, he made some soft porn shows like The Red Shoe Diaries, and Julia Has Two Lovers, but still, he is a smart guy. And playing Mulder for 7 years proved it, at least to me. :-)

So seeing him play this lech on Californication is too much fun. The best things so far on the show?

  1. The constant passes he keeps making at his ex-wife. Although they were never officially married, so the “wife” part isn’t quite true, but still, they have a daughter together, so it’s close enough.
  2. The knee jerk reaction he has to social situations. He just acts without thinking, which is a little backwards to the way one would think a writer would act.
  3. David’s got comedic timing. Yes folks, he can actually make a joke!
  4. The rest of the cast is just wonderful, making every scene a joy to watch.

As you can probably guess from this post, I will continue watching this show. Will you?
