Let the hand wringing begin

Oh the stress that we, the Canadian people are putting ourselves through. Now before you worry that we’re all concerned about who we’re going to vote for in the upcoming federal election, I’ll let you in on a little secret: we don’t really care. Come on now, let’s be realistic. The Conservatives keep trying to tell us that we should be concerned that Paul Martin’s Liberals misspent $300 million of our dollars, but that’s not what’s got us worried. What’s really got us tossing and turning at night is…wait for it….who’s gonna play goal for us in the men’s Olympic hockey tournament?

Yes, it’s true, this is the biggest question being debated in the country right now. And rightly so, in my opinion. Our usual stalwart, Martin Brodeur, is not having the best of seasons right now. Sure, even on a bad day he’s a good goaltender, but with the emergence of non-Canadian goaltenders dominating the NHL, he’s not the sure bet any more. Jose Theodore (my personal favourite) is a tad too up-and-down for anyone’s liking. Ed Belfour is a gazillion years old, and who knows if his back will hold up. Roberto Luongo is also having an off year, which brings us to Curtis Joseph. The last time we saw him in international competition was in Salt Lake City, at the 2002 Winter Games, letting a stinker of a goal in from Mats Sundin. That was the end of him in the tournament, and for most Canadians, the last we wanted to see of him in goal wearing the red maple leaf. Until now.

The fact that Team Canada’s general manager is also his current head coach I’m sure bodes well for Cujo, but Wayne Gretzky has a reputation and history for being fair and picking people who can help out the team. If he thinks Cujo can help, then Cujo gets the invitation. If he doesn’t think so, then Cujo stays home, as simple as that.

Next up, will Staal or Spezza get invitations to camp? Stay tuned.
